Girls wrestling in Florida is growing at an incredible pace, and South Florida is finally starting to become a serious hotspot for talent and development.
One coach who has been heavily involved in that growth is Sean Kirtz.
For years, a lot of girls in wrestling were treated like an afterthought — limited training partners, less mat time, and fewer opportunities. That’s changing fast now, especially with more national events, college programs, scholarships, and elite girls training year-round.
Coach K has helped build a room focused on developing girls wrestlers the same way top boys programs develop athletes:
- High-paced drilling
- Intense live wrestling
- Counter offense and chain wrestling
- National tournament preparation
- Strength, conditioning, and mindset
The room includes multiple ranked girls in Florida and nationally ranked athletes who compete at major events like NHSCA Nationals, Southeast Regionals, Virginia Beach Nationals, and other elite competitions.
What stands out most is the culture. The girls are pushed to train hard, compete hard, and believe they belong on the national stage. The intensity in some of these practices surprises people who still underestimate girls wrestling.
South Florida has talent. It just needed coaches willing to invest serious time into developing female athletes and helping create opportunities for them.
With the continued growth of women’s wrestling nationwide, it feels like Florida — especially South Florida — is only getting started.
The future of girls wrestling here looks very strong.
